Prof. Dr. ilhami GÜLÇİN

Prof. Dr. İlhami Gülçin was born in 1971 in Ağrı, Türkiye. He completed his primary education in the Tutak district of Ağrı and his secondary and high school education at Van Atatürk High School. In 1993, he graduated with high distinction from the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Letters, Van Yüzüncü Yıl University.


He began his academic career the same year as a Research Assistant at the Faculty of Science and Letters, Dumlupınar University. In 1997, he was appointed to the Department of Chemistry at Atatürk University, where he earned the academic titles of Assistant Professor in 2002, Associate Professor in 2007, and Professor in 2012.


Due to his outstanding scientific contributions, Prof. Dr. Gülçin was elected as an Associate Member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) on June 2, 2012, and as a Full Member on December 26, 2020.


On December 16, 2023, he was awarded the “Engineering, Natural and Health Sciences Award” by the İlim Yayma Foundation in a ceremony held with the attendance of the President of the Republic of Turkey, H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He dedicated this meaningful award to Abu Ubayda, a symbolic figure of the Palestinian resistance, which drew significant public attention. Later that same month, on December 26, 2023, he received the TÜBİTAK Science Award. On February 26, 2024, he was internationally recognized with the “37th Khwarizmi International Award (KIA),” presented under the patronage of the President of Iran, H.E. Ebrahim Raisi, an award considered equivalent to the TÜBİTAK Science Award.


Between 2009 and 2023, Prof. Dr. Gülçin consistently ranked among the top recipients of the Science and Incentive Awards presented by Atatürk University. He has also been listed among the “World’s Most Influential Scientists” in multiple fields, according to annual global rankings. He has published over 550 peer-reviewed scientific articles in high-impact journals indexed by the Science Citation Index (SCI), with more than 43,000 citations to his work. With an h-index of 120 on the Web of Science, he is among the most-cited scientists in Turkey.


Prof. Dr. Gülçin has been invited as a keynote speaker to numerous national and international conferences and has presented nearly 400 scientific papers. He has supervised nearly 50 graduate theses, including 25 at the doctoral level. Among his former students, 7 have been appointed as full professors, 7 as associate professors, and 4 as assistant professors in various higher education institutions.


In 2014, 2016, and 2018, he was recognized as one of the most highly cited Turkish scientists worldwide. During the same years, he served as a consultant under the “Distinguished Scientist Fellowship Program (DSFP)” at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia.


From 2007 to 2012, he served as the Director of the School of Health and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Letters at Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen University. He later served as the Dean of the Faculty of Science at Atatürk University.


As of April 10, 2025, Prof. Dr. İlhami Gülçin has been serving as the Rector of Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen University.
